NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key platform, did not confirm his residency plans right away after his victory in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the need to directing my complete efforts on enacting the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Political Debate

In his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

But his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he is from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
