Star Wars enthusiasts have no shortage of choices when it comes to great gaming adventures wielding the iconic energy blades, but the galaxy imagined by George Lucas is not just a battleground for conflict. Rarely have games have grasped this better than Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was crafted in the traditional computer role-playing game style that made developers like Obsidian and BioWare famous. Now, after multiple delays and setbacks, The Game Awards has revealed that players will soon be able to dive into a spiritual successor to the beloved franchise. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
The Big Reveal
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is labeled "an upcoming single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual heir to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Veteran developer Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the game director of the original KOTOR, is spearheading the project at Arcanaut Studios.
“When we developed the original KOTOR, we wanted to forge a quintessential Star Wars experience — designing an adventure that consisted of all the things we longed to doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson stated. “Now, 25 years after we began developing that game, our aspirations are just as ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic signifies an possibility to delve into a modern vision of a quintessential Star Wars experience, using advanced technology and game design, and an all-new story tailored specifically to realize the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”
A Welcome Surprise
The announcement is somewhat of a surprise, given that 2022 saw a recent try at an Old Republic game get delayed indefinitely. However, rumors had suggested that a revival of KotOR, as well as one of its follow-up, had been in the works up until March 2025.
Here is the synopsis for the new title:
Developed by Arcanaut Studios in conjunction with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.
Why KOTOR Matters
The iconic role-playing games, which have been made available to platforms like the Switch, are famous for their conversation-rich, decision-based, and RPG-stat-heavy approach to Star Wars. The games were impactful enough that they unintentionally established how people visualize the Old Republic time period as a whole, to this day. The games dared to question many beliefs of Jedi lore that are often treated as absolute, like whether the faction and its understanding of the Force are right. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, took things in a considerably bleaker direction by inviting players to consider if the world might not be better off without the Jedi at all. Both games are revered by fans years after their release, but the sequel in particular is argued to be as one of the best pieces of Star Wars media in existence.
A Fresh Start
And now, a few years after getting a vibe-heavy trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, fans are finally receiving another game in the similar spirit. Given the demand for rich games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a new take on Knights of the Old Republic that's developed with care has the chance to be incredibly popular.
