UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring several personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct personas, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
