We are verifying images and video circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
