Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

His passing follows less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world says farewell to a genuine innovator whose legacy on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
