The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
