New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
