A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
