New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

New York police released surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
