Early Saturday, reports emerged of significant blasts rocking Tehran, following statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Developments
This event takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the region. Major events leading up to this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further discussions scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed claims about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments remains fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
