Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
