Eurovision Was Once a Campy Joy – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.
An recent acronym came to light several months into the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to medical experts like child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for medical staff to treat a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. However, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.
An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Supposed Ceasefire
The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that genocidal acts are still being committed. Officials has denied these accusations, just as it disavows everything it is implicated in. But while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, apparently, is what unity looks like.
The contest, notably prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is completely different.
A Double Standard
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an effort to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that global media are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it was formerly known for. A competition that was originally built on harmony has transformed into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
