Arne Slot Maintains He Is Safe and Retains Liverpool's Support Following PSV Eindhoven Loss
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it was expected for doubts to be raised about his future following another convincing defeat against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their ninth loss in 12 games, representing the team's worst streak after being relegated in 1953-54.
They were taken apart by the Eredivisie champions on a tough evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, things are alright, I've received significant backing from the top,” the coach stated.
“It's important to reverse this trend and get a victory obviously but if you are coaching a team and underperforming then it's typical that people question you.”
He continued, “I accept my situation. This isn't the initial instance I've found myself in a difficult position but it's necessary that we improved our results.”
Conversations with Club Management
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his conversations with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot said:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive to the team and to me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me all the time each day to say they back me.”
He added, “In the normal discussions I perceive the confidence. But I've not talked to them since this game so far so it remains to be seen.”
Recurring Problems and Player Response
Slot lamented recurring failings from his squad in their European loss, specifically poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more direct in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I haven't got the solutions. Frankly, I don’t. I'm telling that to everybody,” the midfielder stated.
“It is not good enough. I don't have to wait to reflect. I’m past being angry inside. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the club I love. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen this club all my life.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a phase like this with results this poor.”
He finished, “But we still have the crest on our chest. And until it is removed, we'll continue to fight.”
“Our aim is to bring this squad back to the top, show everyone again what this club is about and why people call it the top club in the planet.”
“However currently, we're in trouble and we have to turn it around.”
